Bellamy : The Bad Boy of EPL...

Considered as one of the bad boys of English football, Craig Bellamy's club and international career has been blighted with problems both on and off the field. The talented Welsh international striker has largely been out of the newspaper headlines since joining West Ham at the beginning of last season, he suffered from a sequence of abdominal and groin injuries that have restricted the 29 year old's appearances for the London club to just nine games throughout the whole of 2007/2008 season.

As I write this article, fresh news, in from Upton Park suggests that after a positive start to the pre-season, Craig Bellamy is again been taken to the treatment table for a suspected hamstring damage suffered during the Hammers' friendly against Ipswich Town on Monday night. After working so hard to get fit for the upcoming season, any serious damage would be absolutely devastating for Bellamy, West Ham and the Welsh national side. I guess some players are jinxed?

Despite his negative image, the Welsh captains talent for goals has always impressed the football fraternity seeing him scoring regularly at Blackburn, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Celtic (albeit a loan spell in which he scored 7 goals in 12 appearances). A lack of discipline off the field, though, has put Bellamy at the wrong end of the media discussions on too many occasions I for one like his passion and self belief i think he wouldn't be the player he is without it.

There is no denying of the talent of the Welshman and West Ham stand to gain a lot with a fit Craig Bellamy he may even be the key to success at Upton park. With Dean Ashton and Carlton Cole in fine form, Bellamy's experience upfront could be a key factor in the Hammers pushing for Europe. Even the Welsh coach John Toshack would be keeping his fingers crossed to have his influential captain back for Wales' upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September and October.

Love him or hate him the Premier League will be a worse place at the start of the season without Bellamy, I'm sure Steve Bruce and the Wigan defense will rest a little easier the night before they travel to Upton Park knowing the Welshman won't be around to terrorize them.
