Newcastle : Will Emerge From The Slump...

Newcastle midfielder Nicky But has given the most honest and accurate appraisal of the club's performance last season, no doubt with the incentive of shaming everyone at the club into ensuring that there is no repeat this year.

While Butt maybe using reverse psychology to ensure the club emerges from this slump, the worrying thing is the fact that very little seems to have changed at St James' Park.

This is what Nicky Butt has said about Newcastle United performance.

"Last season was embarrassing for us and it wasnt nice. We didn't perform well and we finished right down the bottom of the table. This year we have to improve and get back up the table where we should be. Going off last year's finish, it is not something to be proud of. It will be another tough year because every club is improving; everyone is throwing money at it and getting better, buying better players. We have to keep up with that. If you stand still you can go backwards."

But surely Newcastle hasn't done this at all? They are in danger of falling even further down the League if they do not add some much needed backbone to the squad. Lacking one outstanding name in both defence and midfield, Keegan must be held to account for his lack of signings. Wise must too, for he has failed in his highly paid role in which he is meant to scout out potential purchases. The club knew that this summer would be the first time Keegan and Wise would be able to go nuts in the market and the pair have just aimlessly wandered around the vast party that is the summer transfer window talking to nobody but themselves.

A season of struggle lies ahead for Newcastle once again and they will have nobody to blame but themselves. A mid-table finish will justify their lack of adventure in the transfer window unless Wise and Keegan can pull it together in the remaining 26 days. Should the pair be made to explain why they have failed to bring in any decent names, or is it simply because the club cannot afford big transfers?
